At the 2005 Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, Yalumba made its presence known with Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier 2004 taking out Best Wine of Show, Best White Wine and Best Wine in an Alternative Closure, as well as Yalumba Hand Picked Series Tempranillo + Grenache + Viognier 2004 receiving the award for Best Red Wine.
Newly appointed Chief of Judges, Max Allen, headed the panel of judges for the AAVWS which aims to provide an alternative to the mainstream wine shows, and the opportunity to showcase alternative and emerging wine varieties. These concepts fit beautifully with Yalumba’s ‘dare to be different’ philosophy and dedication to experimentation.
Since the first vintage release of Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier seven years ago, this wine has earned seventeen trophies and thirty-one gold medals at various shows. Of the 2004 vintage, Louisa Rose, Winemaker notes, “The long ripening period has lead to intense aromas and flavours. Rose petal and apricot nectar aromas combine with lifted honeysuckle and white flower perfume, leading to a long, rich and luscious palate of intense stone fruit flavours that finish with an aromatic citrus freshness.”
Though Yalumba’s history with Tempranillo is not as long as that with Viognier, it has produced this exciting first vintage of Yalumba Hand Picked Series Tempranillo + Grenache + Viognier 2004. Offering aromas of rose petals and raspberries it leads into a palate of juicy tannins and long black cherry flavours. These flavours are made silky by the co-fermentation with Viognier while the Grenache has contributed an enticing spiciness.
