Coonawarra Cabernet Celebrations

Coonawarra’s Vignerons will celebrate the 10th Cabernet Celebration over the weekend of 20th - 22nd October 2006. Thirty events will bring the region alive with music, Master Classes, wine dinners and vineyard tours, culminating in an Auction ‘Coonawarra Barrel Series 10’ of the finest barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2005 vintage.

Menzies tasting note imageYalumba is one of a select group of winemakers in the world with its own on-site cooperage. So as a special Coonawarra Cabernet celebration Yalumba’s home in Coonawarra, ‘The Menzies’ Wine Room will be transformed into a functioning Cooperage, bought alive by Yalumba’s Master Cooper, Andrew Broad, who will proudly demonstrate this unique trade.

Andrew will display the difference between a “barrique” and a “hogshead” and prove that an “Octave” is much more than a musical term. Peter Gambetta, Yalumba’s Coonawarra Winemaker, will join Andrew to engage guests in “The Art of Oak” open discussions whilst tasting the Yalumba range of Coonawarra wines. The Limestone Coast Cheese Company which specialises in traditionally hand crafted regional cheeses will also be on hand with samples of their unique produce.

Yalumba's commitment to Coonawarra was confirmed in March 2002 when ‘The Menzies’ Wine Room & Vineyard was officially opened. Sited at the heart of the Yalumba Coonawarra Estate, the rammed earth building sits amidst a sea of vines on the terra rossa soil that is the very essence of Coonawarra. Surrounding it is an extensive native vegetation area where Yalumba has spent six years working to rehabilitate and rejuvenate the remnant native trees and grasses of the region.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1987, Yalumba ‘The Menzies’ Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has continued to grow in stature and quality. The result is one of the finest expressions of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon.

Menzies outsideGrapes for Yalumba 'The Menzies' Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon are drawn from nine individual subplots within the Estate, with the core original plantings dating back to 1975. These low yielding vines consistently produce grapes with strong colour and intense flavours. Each batch is separately fermented in small lots to maximise complexity and blending options.
