Ralph Kyte-Powell 'Uncorks' Yalumba FDR1A Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz 2000 as his Wine of the Week
"Yalumba's first FDR1A was a 1974 vintage cabernet shiraz that achieved quite a reputation in ensuing years. The codenamed wine (sounds like some sort of jet fighter, doesn't it?) then passed into the realm of legend, until the team at Yalumba's Barossa winery decided it had a worthy follow-up in this 2000 vintage Eden Valley blend. It's a traditional high-quality Oz-style, smelling of lush blackberries and blackcurrants, earth and gentle spice, black chocolate and vanilla. Sweet oak plays a significant role, but it's not overwhelming. The smooth, ripe, middleweight palate is persistent and full, underpinned by ripe dry tannins in great balance. It finishes long and fragrant.
Ageing? Drink over eight years
