"The Barossa-based Yalumba makes great value-for-money wines at many price points. As last year's Quaff wine of the year - that 2005 Yalumba 'Y Series' Shiraz Viognier is still available out there and looking better than ever - was in this budget-priced range I can (fairly) be accused of fancying these Yalumba cheapies. Well, I looked at a range of under $15 sauvignon blancs during the week and this was the pick of them. Interestingly the Sauvignon Blanc from another of the Yalumba labels - Oxford Landing ($8 or less) - was also a good performer. To be frank it requires skilful viticulture and clever winemaking to make decent sauvignon from warm areas. The 2007 Yalumba 'Y Series' Sauvignon Blanc is fresh, clean and vibrant, has cool tropical fruit flavours with some floral notes, and lively zippy acidity.
Rating: Bloody Good"
