Yalumba, Australia’s oldest family owned winery, is honoured to be named the winner of the 2011 President’s Medal by the Royal Agricultutal Society of NSW.

Yalumba was among six finalists vying for the prestigious award, which is Australia’s only produce competition in which food and winemakers are evaluated on their ‘Triple Bottom Line’ performance.

Glenn Dudley, President of the RAS, congratulated Yalumba on being named the ‘best of the best’ in Australian agricultural production. “The President’s Medal recognises Australian producers that create the highest quality products using sustainable practices, all of which are crucial to the future of Australian agriculture,” Mr Dudley said.

Simon Marnie, President’s Medal Judge and ABC 702 Weekends presenter, said this year’s finalists clearly demonstrated that a sound producer can be at the leading edge of technology and production standards without sacrificing a keen awareness of social and environmental responsibility.

"Yalumba lifted the bar in Triple Bottom Line reporting, implementing accountable practises that truly showed a dedicated commitment to the craft. They are also the first finalist to have a quantified strategy of contracts that places an onus of responsibility on all contributors, up and down the chain, to an environmental, social and financially beneficial result," Mr Marnie said.

The win comes after, and as a result of, the Yalumba FSW8B Botrytis Viognier 2009 being awarded the Hanaminno Perpetual Trophy for Best Sweet Wine in the 2010 Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show.

Yalumba’s fifth generation Proprietor Robert Hill Smith said the win highlights the long-term, team focussed culture of the winery.

"After 162 years we continue to learn from those who have come before us while branching out to do things our own way,” he said. “Environmentally-sustainable practises, social objectives and a thorough wine-making regimen are all important aspects for our high quality wine and the future of our business and natural resources."

"As an independent, family owned company Yalumba continues to challenge itself, to strive for excellence in everything we do and, perhaps most importantly, to do the little things brilliantly."

"We are thrilled to receive this award, particularly as it stems from the success of the Yalumba FSW8B Botrytis Viognier 2009. Our commitment to Viognier – a variety we have been working with for more than 30 years – is unwavering."

Yalumba was established in 1849 by Samuel Smith and is based in Angaston, on the easten edge of the Barossa. The Viognier fruit for Yalumba FSW8B is sourced from Wrattonbully in South Australia’s south east. The acronym stands for Fine Sweet White, while 8B represents the vineyard site of the wine.

Yalumba FSW8B is one of six Viogniers within the Yalumba stable, and sits alongside Yalumba Y Series Viognier, Yalumba Organics Viognier, Yalumba Eden Valley Viognier, Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier and Yalumba V de Vie NV – a distilled version of the aromatic wine.
