Mark Hill Smith
Born at the winery Mark was destined to be a wine man. But as Mark was to commence his wine career, World War II intervened and he joined the Royal Australian Navy. When peace broke out 5 years later, Mark headed to Roseworthy College, and began studying viticulture.
On returning to Yalumba, Mark teamed up with Rudi Kronberger the then-Chief Winemaker who was recruited from Austria. They worked on vineyard upgrades, grower liaison and early bottling of Riesling after ferments in stainless steel.
Together with his wife Margie, the wine fraternity were always memorably entertained. Mark took the National Sales role and roamed Australia and overseas creating commercial opportunities for Yalumba. His move to boss was to last until 1985.
