Peter Gambetta – Senior Red Winemaker, Limestone Coast
Peter Gambetta joined the Yalumba Winemaking team as Yalumba Senior Red Winemaker in July 2002 and is responsible for making Yalumba’s premium red wines from the Limestone Coast including Yalumba’s esteemed single vineyard wine - The Menzies Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Peter came to Yalumba with outstanding red winemaking experience and skills, following his leadership position as Group Red Winemaker at Orlando Wyndham and also with an intimate understanding of the premium wine-growing region of Coonawarra. As a Red Winemaker, Coonawarra is a particular passion of Peter’s. “The power and intensity of the fruit from Coonawarra, in particular the Cabernet Sauvignon, is amazing. As a winemaker I try to ensure that the resulting wines are a true expression such fruit intensity but also show elegance and finesse,” he says.
In 1987 Peter graduated from Roseworthy College with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Winemaking). In that same year, Peter got his first taste of winemaking in Coonawarra when he began working at Katnook Estate as Assistant Winemaker. After two years at Katnook, Peter’s talents were recognised by St Hallett wines and he relocated to the Barossa where he was appointed as Winemaker. In 1994 Peter transferred to Orlando Wyndham and became their Senior Red Winemaker and in 1997 he was promoted to Group Red Winemaker, heading up the Orlando red winemaking team up until 2000.
Peter’s winemaking experience hasn’t been limited to Australia. In 1989 Peter travelled to Europe to complete a vintage in France at Chateau Bonnet, and in 1992, 1995 and 1996 Peter was vintage Winemaker for Gyöngyös Estate and Kavar Wines in Hungary. Peter has also been an associate judge at the National Canberra Wine Show (1997 & 1998) and the Adelaide Wine Show (1996 – 1997).
