Vintage 2007 came along on the back of some extremely dry months of growing-season. The drought presented a number of viticultural challenges, notably numerous and significant frost and cold-weather events during winter and spring causing very low crops of grapes being set. Natural rainfall was too sparse for good dry-grown Sauvignon Blanc in most SA regions, but fortunately most of our growers had sufficient supplementary irrigation supplies to keep their vines in good Health, and ample canopy to help shade the fruit from the sun. The persistent dry conditions and low crops contributed to our earliest-ever Sauvignon Blanc ripening period for the Barossa Valley, where first grapes were harvested from the 22nd of January. A couple of day’s worth of welcome rain fell in late January, and this relieved a good deal of water stress from the vineyards, allowing them to ripen the grapes and their flavours without presenting any disease problems.
