Yalumba Corporate

Who we are

Established in 1849 by migrant and English brewer Samuel Smith, Yalumba is one of the most respected names in the global wine industry. Six generations and 170 years later, Yalumba is now Australia’s oldest family owned winery with a rich and diverse portfolio of globally recognised brands.

The Yalumba Charter

With over 170 years of history, we are proudly Australia’s oldest family-owned wine company, continuously building on our successes, ensuring we have a thriving work community creating opportunities for all.
We remain committed to making the best wines possible, wines that are valued and respected by wine drinkers for their intrinsic quality born through heritage, provenance, individuality and a deep understanding of wine culture.
The Yalumba Charter provides a framework of how we can continue to flourish and work with each other and all of our key stakeholders, to help achieve our generational goals.
  • Professionals

We are a team of energetic and dynamic wine business professionals, each of us proud of our contribution to the shared success of Australia’s oldest family owned wine company.

  • Knowledge

We are motivated by the pursuit of knowledge, innovation and improvement. Curiosity and continuous learning is encouraged and rewarded. We refuse to stay still. We lead – we don’t follow.

  • Service

We are committed to service. Our customers are our valued partners and friends and we are driven to find ways to surprise and delight them. Loyalty is a treasured reward.

  • Respect

We believe respect is the bond that makes us successful as a team. We value our differences as much as our similarities and we demand and defend each other’s right to work in a safe environment. The only thing we are not prepared to tolerate is intolerance.

  • Integrity

We uphold the values that come with Hill-Smith family ownership – integrity, respect, honesty and sincerity. We celebrate long-term thinking over short-term expediency, understanding that this is a rare gift in the contemporary wine business.

  • Excellence

We enjoy the opportunity to work hard, to exercise our talents to the best of our ability. We do what we say we will do and seek excellence in everything.

  • We are Yalumba, forever aspiring to be the world’s greatest wine business.

We like winning, not just for the financial rewards that it brings to the company but also for the personal and professional satisfaction that comes with success.

And when we achieve our goals and objectives we celebrate, with enthusiasm, humility and energy. Fun is a ritual that nourishes our culture.

We are Yalumba, forever aspiring to be the world’s greatest wine business.

  • China Investigation — Our Position

On 18 August 2020, the Ministry of Commerce People’s Republic of China (MOFCOM) initiated an Anti-dumping Investigation on wine originating from Australia and named The Yalumba Wine Company in its application.

We duly registered as a foreign-owned producer on 3 September 2020 and have participated openly and comprehensively in both the Anti-dumping and Countervailing Duties sampling questionnaires. At the same time we respectfully, yet categorically, disagree that we have engaged in dumping or other anti-competitive behaviours.

Our family-owned business is now in its 6th generation, led by our Chairman Robert Hill-Smith, and has been in continuous operation since 1849. For most of this time, we have been actively involved in export with records dating back to the late 1800s. As a multigenerational business, we value long term thinking over short term expediency, building our export markets and trading relationships with a balanced approach — steadily, sustainably and with humility. Wherever possible, as we do in China, we employ local wine professionals. This enables us to engage with local wine businesses within appropriate business and cultural structures.

We value the relationship that we have built with many Chinese-owned businesses, both in China and Australia, and the close business and personal ties we have developed over many years. These relationships continue to be strong on an operational front with a mutual desire to continue to trade. We look forward to the time when the political issues between China and Australia are resolved and we resume working collaboratively under the previous ChAFTA arrangements.
