A passion for premium handcrafted red wines has seen Nat develop a sense of patience and faith in the ability of great fruit to become outstanding wine.
Natalie Cleghorn personifies two of Yalumba’s great passions – wine and horse racing. A former track rider at the neighbouring Hayes family property Lindsay Park, Natalie joined Yalumba in 1999. Natalie has experience in wine production in small and large volumes and a love of the noble grape varieties, in particular Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.
Initially employed in the laboratory, Nat gained a Bachelor of Science-Winemaking through Charles Sturt University. Since completing her studies, Nat has enjoyed both commercial and artisan experience at the Hill-Smith family’s estate vineyards. She has also undertaken an international vintage at Clos Figueres in Priorat, Spain, an ultra-premium winery producing world class DOQ wines.
“I find winemaking not dissimilar to the racing world – both involve the growing and handling of fine stock in the hope you can create something special and memorable.”
The Cigar; a name coined by Coonawarra Vignerons to describe the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil. Home to some of Australia’s most famous vineyards, the secret of Coonawarra lies in the intimate bond between the terra rossa soil, limestone layers, pure artisan water and a long cool ripening season. Fortunate to be part of this iconic place, Yalumba salutes the region’s pioneers and those privileged to inherit its future.
