Emerging Studio A artist Lex Tan draws inspiration from Degrassi Junior High, Drew Barrymore and Madonna, using popular culture as a mirror to explore identity and connection. Their portraiture practice celebrates their experience of being non-binary, queer, and living with intellectual disability. “I draw pictures of people because I see them as their celebrity identity,” says Lex, who often designs portraits that reflect both likeness and aspiration. Lex joined Studio A through the studio’s Professional Pathway Award, offering new opportunities to expand their practice from intimate neighbourhood portraits to ambitious large-scale works, while championing visibility for queer people with disability.
