The Caley Museum Release 2016

2016

Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz

This is one of the greatest expressions of this great Australian blend of recent decades. Perfect, compact, fragrant blackcurrant and blackberry fruit depth pauses time as it hovers motionless for minutes.

The Caley 2016 Museum Release is the pinnacle of a long winemaking journey of excellence, that rightfully honours one of Yalumba’s most adventurous sons. A blend of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa Shiraz, The Caley is a classic marriage of two noble varieties and two great Australian wine regions.
Tasting Note Deep brick red colour. The wine is still amazingly youthful with concentrated aromas of cassis, wild oregano, oyster shell, green olives, liquorice and just a hint of leather. The palate is chiselled and defined with red currants and dried herbs. There is still an amazing tension and vibrancy driving this wine, finishing with long ironstone tannins.
Terroir Sourced from three outstanding vineyards in the Coonawarra and Barossa. Planted in 1992, the 2.7ha Yalumba Coonawarra D block vineyard provides 71% of the Cabernet. The Barossa Valley Shiraz was sourced from the Burgemeister “Linke block” 1901 plantings, accounting for 23% of the final blend. The Eden Valley Shiraz selected was the Vintage Vignerons Horseshoe Shiraz vineyard, found on the southern side of the Yalumba winery, accounting for 6% of the final blend.
Treatment Matured for 21 Months in 25% new French Barriques, balance in 2 year and older French Barriques and Hogsheads.

The Museum Collection

Twenty years ago our winemaking team began putting away our flagship wines with the intention for the bottles to be enjoyed at a later date. It was envisioned that beautifully aged wines, released every year, would promote the reputation of surviving heirloom vineyards and consistently show the skilled craftsmanship behind our Yalumba collection.

These wines are aged up to 20 years and capture the essence of our commitment to wines of pedigree and exceptional quality. We have addressed the challenge associated with preserving wines under optimal storage conditions, thereby ensuring their maturity and quality.

When to drink

Built to spend many years in the cellar, The Caley takes time to reveal its true character. The wine will drink beautifully today or in 5 – 30 years.
