James Suckling Top 100 Wines of 2020: The Caley 2016

“A very impressive sense of composure…Density with focus and a strong drive at the finish.”

The team at JamesSuckling.com have been working incredibly hard to keep the wine world connected and up to date with the latest on new releases from all over the world. They have managed to rate almost 18,000 since their last Top 100 list was published in 2019.

This annual report is a list of the most outstanding wines tasted over the preceding 12 months.

Yalumba felt incredibly proud to be included in the list with The Caley 2016. This wine will not be released until June 2021, but Nick Stock was fortunate to see a preview of the 2016 which he awarded 98 points. At #78 The Caley 2016 sits between #77 Château Cos D'estournel St.-Estèphe 2017 and #79 Château Margaux Margaux 2017 – we are in world-class company.

James Suckling spoke to the “golden moment for wine lovers” at the moment, “with so many outstanding quality wines made from around the world in every style and at every price.”

The Top 100 list is selected from wines rated 98 points or more. James explains further:

“This year with our Top 100 list we tried to focus more on relative value for fine and great wines. We only included wines rated 98 points or more, which total 350 names from the almost 18,000 rated. We scored 53 wines 100 points in the last 12 months.

Price is in important factor in the Top 100 list, especially the first 10. All the Top 10 are $100 a bottle or less. We also – as always – took into account what we call ‘wow factor’. It’s that emotional element a wine may give you when you taste it. The feeling of joy and wonder of a great wine.”

Yalumba The Caley 2016

“This has a very impressive sense of composure, offering a very attractive, cedary and floral nose with deep violets and a wealth of forest wood, bracken and blueberries, as well as plums. The palate has intensely ripe, assertive fruit flavors with a succulent, dense and rich delivery of black-cherry, cassis and blackberry flavors. Density with focus and a strong drive at the finish. Long and juicy with real freshness. A blend of 71% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Barossa Shiraz. Drink or hold.”
