Yalumba The Virgilius Eden Valley Viognier
Viognier 2021- Vintage quality: The 2022 vintage was set up well with good rain from June to August, replenishing ground water, starting the vines off healthy and happy. Spring was warm to mild with rain events keeping moisture levels up. Flowering was disrupted by some windy weather, leading to a lower set and final yield. Summer and Autumn were cool and mild, which was ideal for slow ripening to achieve perfect balance of flavour to natural acidity.
- Cellar guide: The Virgilius, while showing all the virtues of great Viognier as a young wine, will reward cellaring as it evolves in the bottle, with even more layers of flavour and aroma.
- Last tasted: December 2023, Louisa Rose, Winemaker
- Notes: Pale gold with green highlights. Aromas of white flowers, fresh apricots, cardamom, white pepper and fresh ginger. Lifted ginger spice is layered on the palate with mineral, sourdough-like texture, apricots and almond savouriness. The hallmark Viognier texture of the palate is clearly evident in this wine. It is complex while at the same time shows purity and restraint that will unwind slowly in the glass and take the imbiber on a sensory journey.
