Tasting Note A complex array of currants and savoury herbs, lifted red raspberry jubes and florals then into fine cedar that sits on the edge of greenness and ripeness. Medium to full depth with a balanced concentration that still exhibits the refinement of structure, acid line and tannin profile that FDR1A is renowned for.
Terroir Sourced entirely from two Eden Valley vineyards. The Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Miles vineyard at Craneford and the Shiraz from Yalumba’s Short’s block vineyard on the southern outskirts of the Angaston township. From these vineyards comes a wine of intriguing complexity that’s as expressive as the earth in which the vines are grown.
Treatment Matured for 12 months in 25% new French oak barriques and the balance in 1 year and older French oak barriques.

Accolades

Perfectly poised
The FDR in this wine's name stands for 'Fine Dry Red'. If it were me, I'd call it 'ALC', or 'Aussie Luncheon Claret', but I guess that's why I'm not in marketing. Eden Valley fruit for this classic Australian blend and it's a deeply coloured, deeply fruited and perfectly poised wine that shows pristine black fruit characters, layers of spice, licorice, earth and a roasting meat tone. There is a very impressive density to its fruit without becoming overblown or suffering loss of clarity, and the tannins melt into the wine as it rumbles off into the distance, all latent power and opulent fruit. Lovely stuff.

Juicy, jubey and quite plush in flavour
A plummy, bright red in the glass, holding its age well. Fragrant aromas of satsuma plum, mulchy earth, dried herbs, violets, dark pastilles, mulberry and a whiff of menthol. Juicy, jubey and quite plush in flavour. There's stewed plum, dark cherry, spice, sweet oak and a decent lick of tannin keeping all in check. Long and layered on the finish.

The Wine

A little wine with a big impact

In 1974, we released one of our best Cabernet and Shiraz wines, ever. It was unceremoniously stamped FDR1A for Fine Dry Red and the bin code 1A. The small bottling became a legend in winemaking circles, accumulating a tree of three trophies and 21 gold medals at some of the most prominent and respected wine shows across Australia. In 2000, FDR1A was recreated and in 2004 it gained a distinctive point of difference with its 100% Eden Valley provenance.
