2024

Grenache

Stunning stuff, which will drink beautifully for at least the next ten to twelve years, longer if required. Surely this is one of the best Tri-Centenary’s they've ever made.

Tasting Note A striking crimson colour. Perfumed aromas of pomegranate, wild redcurrants, raspberry leaf and blood orange florals. The hallmark of this wine is 373 day post-ferment maceration which imparts plush texture, revealing notes of rhubarb and strawberry, with a finish that has great persistence, driven by an impressive tannin profile. Stunning now, it is poised to develop beautifully over the short to medium term.
Terroir This single vineyard Grenache has been crafted from grapes sourced from a two acre block in the Yalumba Tri-Centenary vineyard. Located in the heart of the Barossa Valley, this block comprises 820 gnarly old bush vines that were planted in 1889. The vineyard features deep, sandy loam layers underlain with red-brown clay. As temperatures increase and evaporation levels rise, moisture levels in the sand decrease rapidly, but the vine is able to draw moisture from the underlying clay. With careful management, dry grown vines on these soils can consistently produce outstanding quality fruit.
Treatment After the Grenache grapes were hand-picked and fermented, the wine remained on skins post-fermentation for 373 days. This extended maturation contributes an even greater complexity and individuality to the wine.

Accolades

One of the best Tri-Centenary’s they've ever made
One of the early examples of the old vine Grenache which have entranced winelovers around the world. This one is also well known for the extraordinary length of post ferment maceration, often around an entire year. For the 2024 vintage, it was 373 days. The vines come from two acres planted back in 1899, with just over 800 old bush vines. 4,633 bottles made. Pale crimson in colour, this is a wine with gorgeous aromas. We have spices and herbs, strawberries and raspberries, juicy bay leaf notes, a flick of orange rind and hints of kirsch. There is a touch of sappiness and the wine is fresh and energetic with a fine line of acidity running the length. Stunning stuff, which will drink beautifully for at least the next ten to twelve years, longer if required. Surely this is one of the best Tri-Centenary’s they've ever made.

Superb
The 2024 The Tri-Centenary Grenache is superb. Stylistically, it sits somewhere between the spicy, pressed incense notes of the 2023 and the silky suppleness of the 2022. This wine spent 373 days on the skins—the philosophy now is to press off prior to the next batch coming in to the winery, hence the almost one year between. 14.4% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

So damn beautiful
This is really something. It’s so pale, so perfumed, so riddled with spice, so sinewy and so damn beautiful. Talk about nailing the brief. Red licorice, orange peel, saltbush, rust, crushed fennel, strawberry and brine characters run in beautiful, fluid fashion from start to finish, both refreshing and seducing as they do so. This was a clear case of love at first sip.

A wine with history and prestige

In our Old Vine Charter, a Tri-Centenary vine is classified as a vine whose life has spanned at least three centuries. The Tri-Centenary Grenache is made with Tri-Centenary bush vines that were planted in 1889. For the past 130 years, these rare vines, now crooked and gnarly, give up small quantities of exceptional grapes that we craft into this memorable wine.
